Make sure you follow this simple advice in order to protect your home while you are away. You don’t want to spoil a fabulous holiday by forgetting to secure your home and making sure its safe. Please just take a few minutes to read our list of tips as a guidance to help protect your home from crime whilst you enjoy yourself on holiday.

Before you go

Remember:

  • Make your home look occupied- have timers set on lights to come on at night or arrange for a friend or neighbour to visit the home.
  • Ask a trusted friend or neighbour to close your blinds at night, as if you leave them closed throughout your stay, it can become obvious .
  • Ask neighbours to use your driveway as it makes it look like people are coming and going into your home.
  • Cancel any milk or newspaper deliveries.
  • Try not to mention holiday plans in front of strangers.
  • If you can see your post through your door then consider blocking it out while your away or asking a neighbour to move it when they visit.
  • Consider putting any valuables from in the shed into your house.
  • Make sure that you’ve locked gates, all outside doors and windows, and set a burglar alarm if you have one.

The Journey

  • Avoid putting your home address on your luggage, when you are travelling to your holiday destination.
  • Put all valuables including cash, jewellery, cameras and passports in your hold all so they are with you at all times.
  • Avoid taking expensive jewellery abroad.
  • Consider using a lock to secure your suitcase and the belongings inside, this will deter thieves, and think about putting a belt around your case to prevent it from expectingly opening.
  • Don’t leave your luggage unattended at the airport as it could be stolen or security staff may remove it.
  • When you get to your destinations airport, collect your luggage as soon as possible and check your luggage if it looks like it has been tampered with.

At the Destination

  • If you are using currency abroad don’t take all of it out at once, try to hire the hotel rooms safe and just take out the amount you need that day/night.
  • Hire the safe in your hotel room so that all important documents, money, passports etc. are in a safe place. If you chose not to hire a safe or if there isn’t one, try to keep money in small amounts separate so its not in a big pile all together.
  • Thieves are more common than you think in holiday resorts so try not to leave handbags lying around or jewellery inside, only wear jewellery which is needed and keep a watch on your bag.
  • Only carry what is needed when going out on holiday, try not to carry too much money, electronics, jewellery as pick-pocketing and handbag and jewellery snatches are in most holiday destinations.
  • Try to avoid ‘con’ artists as although you are trying to have a good time criminals try to take advantage of this, and offer you things and make promises to make your holiday that bit better when it could really ruin it.
  • If you feel uneasy about thefts and burglary then consider hiding expensive valuables in a ‘can-safe’ which can look like tins of food, hairspray, drinks and even sun-cream to help keep your valuables out of sight.
  • You can also add temporary door locks which look like a slide ruler that keeps your room door closed and locked so it will stop anyone if they should try to get in your room.
  • Personal attack alarms, are another type of security to put on your door, which has a string that you would pull to activate it, and will often go around the door handle. Should anyone try to open the door then this would activate a alarm.
