Moving into a new home soon? Here’s some advice on ensuring it’s secure…
The British Crime Survey indicates that people who have lived in their new home for less than a year, are twice as likely to be burgled. The reasons for this can be varied, however by being one step ahead with your security of your home can out rule yourself out of that statistic. Whenever you can, plan ahead to so that you always feel as safe as possible in your new accommodation. This blog may help you with feeling at ease and having your new home as secure as possible.
Keyhole Kate’s can provide new or old homes with a full security check should you feel you need this.
Changing the locks
It is always best to change the locks when moving into new accommodations. Even though you may be given 1, 2, 3 sets of keys to the new property, you never know if they have been copied prior or how many other people have keys to your new home. Even if you are moving into a rented property, it is still advisable to do this, so ask the landlord to do it for you. You may have to pay this expense for having your locks changed, but not only for peace of mind but safety too, it is a good investment of your new home.
Burglar Alarms
If your new home is already fitted with a burglar alarm, then it is advisable to have it serviced to make sure that it is still fully operating. From that, you should also change the code of the unit, as old owners of the property would have set this. If your home doesn’t have a burglar alarm, then considering getting one fitted is wise. Buying/renting a new home can be costly, so if your budget can’t stretch to a completed fitted alarm system, consider having a dummy box outside of your home. Once you have the dummy box, install it where it is highly visible to passers by and neighbours.
Window Locks
If your home already has window locks fitted, then be sure to receive all keys needed from the previous owner of the property. If any of the locks don’t work or lock properly then call out a professional locksmith like Keyhole Kate’s and they can change the locks for you. This way, you are at ease that the windows lock correctly and are safe. They will also be compliant with your requirements for your home insurance. Again, if your property doesn’t have window locks fitted, make sure that the windows are secure how they are. If not, having windows with locks that work correctly may be something you should consider in the near future.
