The Easter Holidays is a great time to go on holiday, but over the years we’ve seen first hand the implications that present themselves when families go away, forgetting to protect their homes in the right way.

It’s easy to forget about your home when you go on holiday, as you start getting excited for your break away and the kids start to buzz about the prospect of being off school. The most common time for burglaries to occur is when homes are empty, and this generally means the family within has gone on vacation to a magical place, far, far away.

Breaking into an unguarded home when it’s empty is relatively easy and the cunning thieves of the UK are quick to pick up on this. Not every burglar is an opportunist, there are ones which will know exactly when you leave your home and when you are returning. Because of this, it’s important to lock your doors and make sure your home is almost bullet proof when you go away.

Make Sure You Lock All Doors and Windows!

When you go away this Easter, the following tips could prevent you from returning to an empty or damaged property…

 

• Probably the most important… Lock ALL your doors and windows! Whether you are going away for a day, or you are heading off for a week long holiday, it’s incredibly important to check all windows and doors are locked before you go. Most insurers won’t take an insurance claim seriously if a burglar has entered through an unlocked door or window – So be careful!

• Ask a trusted family member or friend to keep an eye on your house. Remember not everyone can be trusted so don’t be leaving any spare keys kicking about.

• Royal Mail offer a Keepsafe service where parcels and post can be kept on hold for up to 66 days. This means post won’t pile up and alert potential burglars to a place without inhabitants. You should take advantage of this, even during a week long holiday, just incase!

• Leaving blinds and curtains open, maybe leaving lights on, or even using a light timer can make your home appear occupied. Burglars are less likely to strike if a house appears to have people inside.

• Be careful who you share your holiday plans with. Especially on Social Media. You never know who’s watching so posting plans of a family holiday online could blatantly advertise your home to potential thieves.

• Aside from your home, you should make sure your garage and shed is locked up too. Most people keep valuable tools, sports gear such as bicycles, or appliances in these locations, so locking your shed and garage could stop these from being taken whilst you are away.
